News about data breaches is everywhere. It seems that none of the places where our personal information is kept is as secure as we’d want. According to Forbes, 300 data breaches with the theft of 100,000 or more records have occurred during the past decade.

The scenery is getting uglier as the years go by, therefore an efficient solution is required to ensure the security of data, especially on social media. Solcial, a permissionless social Network proffers this solution.

Social media has fundamentally altered how individuals receive and share information, democratizing communication in a way that no antecedent has ever done. However, several significant security threats for both businesses and individuals come along with the great innovation.

Social media, among other internet-based products, is a major unsupervised conduit for data leakage, as it encourages people to share too much private information which is most times poorly encrypted.

This gives internet fraudsters and hackers access to information that greatly aids them in hacking organizations and enables the spread of lies in the context of misconceptions or identity fraud.

Social media sites continue to have significant data breaches, and there are no indications that this egregious invasion of confidentiality and privacy will stop any time soon.

DATA LEAKAGES: WHO IS TO BLAME?

The very structure of the internet as we know it today (Web 2.0) is to blame for the numerous incidents of data leakages.

Originally, when the internet was invented (Web 1.0) everyone was welcome to develop on it, and it was governed by standard computers. We could say that the first iteration of the Internet was decentralized and open source.

Then followed the second iteration of the internet (Web 2.0) that laid the building block for sites like Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, and Google who later discovered that internet advertising had the potential to fetch them a lot of money, thus they decided to monetize their platforms to effectively target advertisements, which led them to resort to amassing user data.

This marked the end of the decentralized internet, more so the internet ceased to be open source because of these tech corporations. Their major motive being “user data collection” for the purpose of advertisement resulted in a data monopoly and the issue of data leakages as these tech companies gather vast amounts of data on centralized systems

which are vulnerable to attacks because data is the resource that everyone wants to access in today’s society. Hackers end up attacking these centralized systems and seizing this data and selling it to other companies who are ready to pay hefty sums for it.

A RECENT CASE OF DATA LEAKAGE: LinkedIn

A peculiar case of data leakage rocked the professional networking behemoth — LinkedIn in June 2021 when the data of about 700 million of its users was published on a dark web platform.

By employing data scraping methods, a hacker going under the handle “God User” dumped a first information data set of over 500 million users by abusing the site’s Applications Programmable Interface (API).

Shortly, a statement that they were selling the whole 700 million client database was then made in response. These stolen data contained the phone numbers, email addresses, social media handles, genders, and geolocation records of affected users.

Nevertheless, despite LinkedIn’s claim that no sensitive, private personal data was disclosed, the scraped data that was published would provide cyber criminals plenty of information to develop convincing, follow-up social engineering assaults after the breach.

WEB 3.0: MAKING THE INTERNET DECENTRALIZED AGAIN

Web 3.0, backed by blockchain technology, aims to revive the decentralized ideals of the first iteration of the internet.

Web3 seeks to decentralize the internet once again by using tools that allow users to retain ownership over their data and utilize it as a form of income generation.

Web 3.0 guarantees that user data cannot be stolen as data isn’t stored in a centralized server, rather they are stored in multiple locations on the internet which makes it impossible for hackers to penetrate.

Solcial employs Web 3.0 and its decentralized principles and continued peer-to-peer technology development to address the issue of data leakage as peer-to-peer networks enable users to link their devices directly to the devices of their audience and distribute material among them.

By putting in place a system that links the data associated with their data to other pieces of information, users who utilize Solcial may be able to protect their data against data theft, misuse, or leakage.
