The Web 2.0 world presents an entire sphere for information sharing and other related activities such as online shopping, remote working etc.

Web2 has also provided avenues for information-sharing platforms like blogs and social media particularly Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and related platforms which have become increasingly popular with millions of users exchanging information and creating connections on these platforms.

In as much as Web 2 has made it more easy to conduct social activities, create communities, establish relationships and publish non-generated content, it also has its drawbacks which are issues that are related to terms of privacy and personal information protection.

Going by the worldwide with consortium (W3C), which envisages that the social web should facilitate creation of relationships across the entire web while giving people the ability to control their privacy and data, this does not seem to be the modus operandi of Web 2.0 because cases of private information and data theft are now prevalent.

Beneficial as Web 2.0 maybe, it has lapses where protection of private personal data is concerned. These lapses have made it easy for cyber criminals to operate with ease and users aren’t provided with adequate web security necessary to keep their information secure.

With the millions of users tweeting, blogging, and uploading content on a daily basis, these cyber attackers have found subtle means such as “Do It Yourself” crime-ware toolkit, which have embedded in them multiple vulnerability bugs, that further lower entry barrier and make it easy for data theft or bridge to be carried out.

Facts have it that:

Web pages are infected with malware at least every 4.5 seconds

Also, according to reports from Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), the number of sites infected with crime-ware reached an all time high of 31,173 in December 2008. This was with an increase of 827% from that of January of the same year

Research has also found that at least one in five online users in the United states have fallen victim to cyber crime in the last two years.

Data Theft otherwise called “Information Theft” is a scenario where sensitive, confidential and protected data is being disclosed without the owners’ permission.

Any information that is being accessed without due permission, be it personal or organizational data from any platform, especially if the organization has been charged with the responsibility of keeping the said information safe, has been subjected to data theft.

Data theft is considered serious security and privacy issue. It is an illegal transfer or storage of financial, personal and confidential information. Data theft takes place in many organizations be it a small private businesses or big corporations.

The crux of data theft which is its most notable effect is that once anyone gets access t personal and private information regardless of what type of information it is, they are at liberty of being used against its owners’ will or permission.

Often, when data is stolen it is with malicious intent. Gaining enough access to information that is confidential or personal via data theft can grant the perpetrators of this act access to set-up secure accounts, unauthorized credit cards in the victims name or use the victims identity in an otherwise unacceptable manner.

Attackers can demand ransom from their victims for certain information that they have in their possession. These information can also be used to trace their victims, putting users’ lives at risk.

Users whose data have been stolen should be able to sue the social platform, but it is almost impossible to do so follow the bill of consent we are forced to accept before we open accounts.

Way Forward?

Regardless of how beneficial Web 2.0 technology may seem, it is still inadequate and cannot provide data security.

Considering the significant damage that unauthorized access to confidential and private data can cause in the social media space, there is need to seek for possible implementable solutions, hence, the rise of Web3 and the Web3 social media solution — Solcial.

What Is Solcial And How Does It Solve The Issue Of Data Theft?

Solcial is a social media network that is designed on web 3.0. It is primarily set at having users monetize their content and passing across information that is free and fair. Solcial allows users build profitable relationships without having to fear or worry about their information being accessed against their will.

As opposed to what we have in Web 2.0, Solcial is a decentralized network which means there is no central control. It is also designed such that your private information are not stored thereby reducing the chances of cybercriminals access to zero.

The system does not rely on servers or gateways which eliminates the possibility of users experiencing data theft or downtime due to the need for data recovery.
